Social Marketing vs Social Media Marketing: Is there really a difference?

February 26th, 2008 by casey

Interesting read over at Church of the Customer today. For the first time in a while I completely disagree with their point of view. I think it’s a huge mistake to say these thoughts/practices are different; 10 years ago the natural tools/landscapes were different but is that really the case now?

If you are looking at the internet/social media/the digital space as a medium or marketing space, you’re wrong. These tools are as natural as the grocery store produce aisle for conversation. Sure, there are a ton of bad social media marketing examples, but that’s the case for marketing in general. Did you watch the Superbowl?

Social marketing has to incorporate social media to have social impact today. It’s just the reality. It’s not about buying MySpace or Facebook, but you better be there. To be blunt, if you are separating them, you are misunderstanding the web.
