Today’s example of maddeningly vague language

May 14th, 2008 by Chris

If you’re like me and find the New York Times News Quiz application on Facebook to be a great way to confirm your elitism and general hoity-toity-ness, you probably saw the third question in today’s quiz:

Question 3 of 5: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton won a strong victory over Senator Barack Obama in Tuesday’s primary in _______________, where racial considerations emerged as an unusually salient factor as Mrs. Clinton drew strong support from white, working-class voters who have spurned Mr. Obama in recent contests.

an unusually salient factor?!?!
racial considerations?!?!

Does this strike anybody else as unnecessarily obtuse? Why can’t they just come right out and say it?

And for a bit of levity and fun, what are the salient factors that you consider when choosing an elected official?

Brilliant old guys who drink too much with a roving eye for much younger members of the opposite sex — and I’m thinking Churchill not Clinton
