The Mobile Web

June 1st, 2008 by Jeremy

For those of you bored to death with interminable stories of how much money Mark Zuckerberg’s worth even though his company can’t work out how to make any, relief is at hand.

Over the next few months a series of launches will occur in the mobile phone ’space’ that will likely herald an entirely new phase for web-enabled digital communications. First up will be a new 3G iPhone from Apple. Then Google will launch it’s Android mobile operating system. A little later will come WiMax and LTE, ultra-fast blanket wireless networks being developed by various consortia including Sprint, Comcast, Google, Intel and Verizon among others.

Meanwhile here’s a glimpse of what a mobile hyperlocal future might look like.

To keep you up to speed with the details and potential consequences of these developments, the Next Engine will commence a weekly review of activity in this critical area. The heavy-lifting will begin later this week with an overview of all things mobile: where we are, how we got here, and why mobile is about to lose its tag as the eternal ‘next big thing’.
