Can this new search engine “un-verb” Google?

July 28th, 2008 by udayan

Cuil (pronounced “cool”) launched today. I am still playing around with it and it certainly seems worth taking a second look. It claims to have a search index that spans 120 billion web pages (According to Cuil’s developers that number could be three times the size of Google’s index). Cuil’s search is also “Contextual”. And unlike Google’s search results that read like a laundry list Cuil’s search results are formatted more like that of a magazine (with images too). Cuil also promises not to retain user information - a definite plus point over Google. Developed by a former Google search engine architect Anna Patterson and Standford professor Tom Costello, Cuil is backed up by $33 million in venture funding.Although it looks like Cuil might give Google a few sleepless nights it will be interesting to see whether it can prove to be a worthy competitor to Google when Microsoft and Yahoo tried and are still trying.

“Welcome to Cuil—the world’s biggest search engine. The Internet has grown. We think it’s time search did too.”

    CUIL:
We didn’t find any results for “mark twain”
    Some reasons might be…
a typo. Please check your spelling.
your search includes a term that is very rare. Try to find a more common substitute.too many search terms. Please try fewer terms. Finally, try to think of different words to describe your search.

    Google:
Results 1 - 10 of about 15,100,000 for mark twain [definition]. (0.24 seconds)

    Hmm…

As far as I’m concerned. Fail. On a search for my name, they get a photo of me (from digital-web magazine, taken a few years ago) mixed in with some story about that douche from mailboxes etc also surrounded by other stories about lawsuits against him. Great. If this searchengine takes off I think I will need a PR agent to clear my name!

Hm, I got over 5 million results for Mark Twain (with a space).

I think they’ve been fixing lots of algorithm issues in the past few days. I just love that my namesake gets reviews like this:
“Mr. Amos is lethal, people, look at his history in franchising, he will strip you of every dollar you have.”

    Better watch out folks! lol
