Cuil’s first day at the office: Hype meets reality

July 29th, 2008 by udayan

It looks like the alarm bells are already ringing for Cuil right from day one. Here is one article that highlights some of the glitches (and they are huge!) that the users encountered yesterday. I don’t get this. When you want to take on the likes of Google you better be a notch above them. Users will not give a damn even if you come close to the almighty search engine that Google is. People use it every day like breathing air. Cuil not only disappointed, it failed miserably. (A good example is the comment given by Jim Amos in my earlier posting) And you don’t even need a beta testing phase to get to know some of the glitches. They are so “in your  face”.  Hype can get your name out there. But if the offering does not meet the promise you are going to piss people off. And second chances are hard to come by.

Moral of the story: Don’t launch a product until its ready

@mansi: agreed. I think the days of being able to use the line ‘its only beta’ are fading. I’m getting tired of apps that generate buzz and not much else.

I feel for the dev team.

From the trenches, I can assure you that 1000+ failure tests cannot guarantee a flawless launch. It was a rocky start, but there’s still time to brush off the dirt and get going.
